The Key Counting Method

A revolutionary approach to understanding rhythm

A Quick 1-Minute Introduction...

Hi there! I'm excited to tell you about my new Key Counting Method course. Be sure to scroll down for more videos and information about the course.

The Key Counting Method

I originally created this new method of counting rhythms to help demystify odd time signatures and make them feel more accessible. When you use it, complex time signatures become just as easy to play as 4/4. This method truly levels the playing field, making all time signatures easy to play.

Then, I realised the method has many useful applications in 4/4. For example, you can use it to remember complex rhythms, which frees you up to play in a more musical way.

It will also improve your creativity by helping you to generate hundreds of unique rhythms for grooves and fills without the need to read or write music! It's a great way to break out of a musical rut.

I’ve had very positive feedback so far, but if you’re not satisfied after 30 days, there is a money-back guarantee.

"I can’t emphasize enough how clever and helpful this method is! Whether you are a beginner, or have been playing all of your life, you should dive head first into this course!"

Odd Time Signatures

Odd time signatures, particularly odd 16th note time signatures like 17/16 or 21/16, can be intimidating for many musicians.

There are a few existing approaches to playing in odd times that you may or may not be familiar with. Watch the short videos below where I explain these methods and discuss each of their downfalls.

Then, I will tell you more about the Key Counting Method, which can directly replace all three.

Old Approach #1: The Remainder Method

The remainder method simply involves thinking in quarter notes and taking note of how many 16ths remain.

Old Approach #2: The Chunking Method

The chunking method involves taking the notes in your time signature and grouping them into smaller chunks.

Old Approach #3: The "Not Quite Doubled" Method

This method is similar to the Remainder Method, but you count 8th notes and count a short number for the remaining odd 16th note.

The New, Revolutionary Key Counting Method!

This simple method will have you generating hundreds of unique rhythms for grooves and fills in minutes, without the need to read or write music!

"The Key Counting Method is like 5-minute-abs for drums. But it actually works!"

- Chris Reeve, Filter

Joe Crabtree
Joe Crabtree

Joe Crabtree started playing drums at age 11, and by age 14 his teacher declared there was nothing further he could teach him. By 15, Joe was spending his free time teaching 20 students of his own, many of whom were two or three times his age. They came to Joe for his reputation as a drummer who could break down problems and explain concepts in a way which was easy to understand.

Joe went on to use his analytical mind to gain a degree in astrophysics at Durham university, yet moved to London in 2004 to pursue a professional career in music. He joined King Crimson's David Cross for shows in Japan, and later toured with progressive rock band Pendragon with whom he recorded two live DVDs.

In 2007, Joe became the drummer for Wishbone Ash and to date has recorded 4 studio albums, 8 live albums, 4 DVDs, and played over 1,000 shows worldwide.

Keen to widen his skill set, he taught himself to program in his free time and developed the iPhone app PolyNome - The Ultimate Practice Tool. It is used by many of the world's top drummers including Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine and Virgil Donati.
